The year is 2045. The greed of unregulated global corporations and billionaires has led to the increase of environmental exploitation, pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions over the last decades. The resulting climate change has caused the steady rise of Earth’s average temperature, ocean acidity, sea level, and frequency of extreme weather phenomena like storms and wild fires. All of these effects have a severely negative impact on all ecosystems on our planet, among them the coral reefs. These are one of the most crucial ecosystems for maintaining life in the ocean and thereby the whole planet. By now, we have lost the majority of our coral reefs, which in turn has disturbed all our ocean- and land-based life, putting our own human survival at risk.

From the entire human population on Earth, two factions have arisen, offering two wildly different solutions. On the one side, the Environmentalists, have set out to restore the balance of life on Earth by rescuing the coral reefs. On the other side, the Capitalists, have chosen to invest all of their accumulated capital into developing space rockets and long-term life support systems to allow the wealthiest one percent to escape the impending collapse of our planet’s ecosystems.

Which side will you support?

Coral Quarrel is an asymmetrical card game for two players, representing the Environmentalists and the Capitalists, who face off in a struggle over the coral reefs and ultimately the survival of our planet. Whereas the Environmentalist player gets points by aligning coral halves between card edges, the Capitalist player earns points by accumulating coins on them. Both influence each other by playing on the same shifting row of cards and try to maximize their points before the game ends after six rounds.
